Nintendo Game Boy

The Game Boy is the most popular video game system ever made, selling around 150 million around the world. With the Advance model being released there are now four main versions available.

Original - 1988

Original Game Boy

  • Display: 2.6" Screen, 160x144 resolution

  • The original required 4 AA batteries for anywhere from 15-30 hours worth of play.

Game Boy Pocket - 1996

Silver Game Boy Pocket
Updated Game Boy with better screen and smaller size machine. Runs original Game Boy carts. No other changes to hardware made at this point. Released in different colour cases such as silver and clear case. Only requires 2 batteries making it much lighter.

  • Allows connection to another Game Boy or to the Game Boy printer infrared communication port.
  • Colour games which use only the additional colour tables will work on the old Game Boy. Games which make use of the CGB's expanded RAM (32K), processing speed, and graphics however, will not be compatible.

Game Boy Advance - 2001

Updated again but still maintains backward compatibility. The GBA is more powerful and has a larger screen. Looks were set to dominate the handheld market years to come.

Nintendo DS - 2005
