Hiro is one of the few ninjas that has the ability to use Kuji-Spells which are unlocked by finding and praying at hidden shrines These spells not only allow Hiro to throw fireballs or slow down time but some also allow Hiro to gain control over any of the animals roaming around the levels. This gives him access to the abilities of that particular animal.

If no animal is nearby, simply slaying an enemy will do as the samurais will transform back to their initial form once killed. Also hidden in the levels are coins with which the player can buy additional items such as throwing stars or potions. The latter he can also make himself by collecting plants and finding/buying recipes.
