Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro for the PS1 was originally designed to feature a climactic final boss battle atop the Twin Towers. Due to the September 11 attacks, Activision halted the release, quickly recalling pre-9/11 copies to edit the ending, change cutscenes, and rename levels that referenced the World Trade Center.

The 9/11 Changes
Following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, the game was heavily edited to prevent distressing the public.
The Final Level: The final battle was originally set on top of the original World Trade Center's Twin Towers.
Story Retcons: In the original, Electro yelled "Top of the world!" as he escaped to the towers. In the modified retail release, Spider-Man just happens to guess correctly.
Thor's Cameo: A cutscene featuring Thor was entirely removed because it tied into the Twin Towers battle location.
Beyond the major shift away from the Twin Towers, the post-9/11 retail recall of Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro required a variety of smaller, specific changes across the map architecture, levels, and unlockables:

Level Name and Mission Swaps
"Top of the World": The original name of the final level was completely changed to "Best Laid Plans".
"The Modern Age": The level title "Sky-High Scorpio" was initially changed to distance the game from sky-scraper imagery, alongside tweaks to several other mission titles.

Architectural and Textural Tweaks
The Skybridge Addition: In the original pre-9/11 layout, the final boss arena consisted of two completely separate buildings. In the revised retail version, a large skybridge was added between the structures to visually transform them into a generic, fictional complex.
Window Restructuring: The building textures originally used tight, closely-spaced vertical panes that heavily resembled the distinct facade of the World Trade Center. These were re-textured to look like standard rows of square office windows.
Destruction Mechanics: A pre-release gameplay set-piece where Electro actively targets and destroys a portion of the North Tower's upper floor was entirely removed to avoid insensitivity.

Cutscenes and Unlockables
Daily Bugle Headlines: A pre-rendered video showing a Daily Bugle front page reading "THOR SAVES MANHATTAN" was rewritten to "THOR SAVES THE CITY".
Blank Storyboard Panels: The game features unlockable in-game storyboards. Because developers did not have time to redraw the background art, the Twin Towers were simply erased, leaving several comic panels with awkwardly blank backgrounds.

How to Spot a Pre-9/11 Disc
Because a small batch of first-pressing discs escaped the factory recall (often referred to by developers as having "fallen off the truck"), collectors hunt for them using specific tells:
The Disc Serial (PAL Regions): The rare pre-9/11 pressing reads SLES-03623 with no suffix. The modified retail copy adds a hashtag: SLES-03623#.
