First outing for Star Wars on Playstation - players once again become Kyle Katarn, the unknown rebel spy who stole the all-important Death Star plans before the opening of the first Star Wars movie.

In Star Wars: Dark Forces you play a young maverick named Kyle Katarn. Kyle possesses a mysterious past. At one time his mercenary talents were deployed on behalf of the Galactic Empire. However, in Dark Forces he holds a tenuous alliance with the good guy Rebels.

Chronologically, the events that transpire in the game are set just before Luke Skywalker comes to our attention in Star Wars: Episode IV. The game is broken into 14 missions aimed at thwarting the nefarious plans of arch bad buy, Darth Vader. The dark lord has begun development on an enhanced Storm Trooper called a Dark Trooper. It would seem that the Empire tired of the human troopers' notoriously bad marksmanship.

These more powerful soldiers pose a threat to the nascent Rebellion and as Kyle Katarn your job is to learn as much about the Dark Troopers as you can and stop them before all hope is lost.

Kyle comes equipped with a Head Lamp, and will also discover Infrared goggles that help you see in the dark. Both items help light up dark areas (there are quite a few in the game) but are battery-powered meaning that they'll run out of juice. The Head Lamp's usefulness is further hampered by allowing your enemies to see you. Nonetheless, both items are helpful in your efforts to reveal a number of the game's "secrets".

The world of Dark forces is entirely 3D and the camera angle is completely 1st Person. Kyle can jump and aim at the numerous targets that present themselves. He can also swim and explore various nooks and crannies. The enemies he encounters are readily identifiable. They have that rough-hewn look familiar to players of Doom but are acceptable given the 1996 release date.

Darth Vader appears in the game and sounds just like his on-screen counterpart. The weapons scream with that telltale sound familiar to fans of the series and the entire gameplay package is accompanied by John Williams' famous soundtrack from the films.
